Title

Attracting and Serving New Audiences: A Capacity Building Forum for the Wisconsin Forestry Education Community.

 

Abstract

With funding from the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board, WFREA is organizing a 1-day forum to develop a roadmap for the creation of a Vision 2012 for Education and Outreach about Sustainable Forestry in Wisconsin. The forum will bring together forest stakeholders that represent the industries, organizations, and institutions invested in sustainable forestry education. The goal of the forum will be to collaboratively define education priorities for the forestry community for the next 5 years.

 

Time and Place

9AM to 5PM on Wednesday, October 8th 2008 in the Home Range Hall of the Leopold Legacy Center in Baraboo, WI.

 

Draft agenda

 

Pre-Conference

  • Personal Mastery – Each organization describes their role in Sustainable Forest Management (e.g. How are we operationalizing SFM in our programs?). Can we use www.forestryforum.pbwiki.com for this?

Forum

  • Introduction and Overview of Day – Dr. Howe
  • Begin with the End in Mind – Stakeholder groups work to define their shared vision using the organizational visions developed before the forum. Facilitator pursues large group dialogue of shared vision statements.
  • Shared Possibility (Mobius Model?) – Stakeholder groups work to define needs, assets, priorities, and commitment to achieve their shared vision. Facilitator pursues large group dialogue of shared possibility (World Café?)
  • Commitment – Stakeholder groups work to achieve commitment on shared priorities. Facilitator pursues large group dialogue of priorities and commitments.
  • Team Learning – Facilitator pursues dialogue for development of Vision 2012 for Forestry Education in Wisconsin.

Nick,
If you are looking for collaboration among landowner groups, I think it would be helpful if the participants in this group would identify how they think the groups could or would collaborate. Have them identify how their organization would benefit from or be weakened by collaboration. Also what would have to take place for collaboration to happen?
I think there are reasons why collaboration has been limited, and those reasons can be elicited before the meeting begins. Then if there is interest in making it happen, then the participants could work on that. I think that putting everyone in a room and expecting something to change will have limited success.
My sense is that every group has its own focus and limited resources of time and money to accomplish its goals. They don’t have the time or energy to work towards the other organization’s goals. They would see that as not being focused on their own goals.

Any work that can be done prior to the meeting will make the meeting more productive.
